Beauty in South Central Texas

Beauty in South Central Texas

We spent about 3 weeks in the area around San Antonio and found beauty in several different areas around there.  Take a look

Morning on the Golf Course

Often, when looking at a golf course, you can get lost in the idea of where the golf balls need to go.  But, one morning, the sun in the sky didn’t let me forget that it’s also a snippet of nature, even though it may be located very close to a city.  Early spring means you can see the silhouettes of the trees clearly with warm clouds behind them.  Take a moment to embrace the quiet.

Line of Trees

The pond in front of these trees isn’t very large, but it was still and that was most important to allow me to capture their mirrored reflection.  It’s moments like this that bring the beauty of nature home to those who take the time to notice them.

Incoming

At a natural area close to the Medina River in Texas, there was a small garden.  In the garden, was an orchid tree.  I had never really known that orchids could grow on trees, and I was spending a few moments photographing the blooms.  Suddenly, a busy little bee decided that he had work to do and just flew into my camera range.  What lucky timing!

Near the Pond

It’s a quiet morning in the middle of spring.  The trees are starting to fill in with leaves and green becomes the color of the day every day!  There are morning clouds that look like they might be thinking of raining, but the sun is starting to burn through them.  Enjoy the green in changing light.

Walking Along the Medina River

There is a path that runs along the Medina River, and when walking along the river, it sometimes feels like you are walking onto the set of some sort of fairy tale.  It’s cool from both the river’s effect on the temperature and the shade of the trees.  This felt like some sort of hidden spot where almost anything could happen.

Reflection

The river’s current is running silent and deep enough that it was impossible to get a sense of it by looking at the rocks in the river.  It appears as calm as calm can be and like a mirror.  It’s impossible to tell from this closer image how fast the water is moving, due to how smooth it is.  You get a sense of peace gazing at the rocks in the river.

Enjoy!

Surreal Morning

Surreal Morning

Sometimes, reality is amazing!!  This images were just as they appeared on a very special morning in Galveston!

Early Morning Colors

One Morning, as my husband and I were driving along Galveston Island in search of birds, we came across this surreal sight. The play of morning mist, the angle of the sunrise’s light, and the vegetation in the area all combined to make this a pastel morning view.

Morning Field

It was a misty morning, and the sun’s morning colors turned this view of a field into something magical.  It felt like my husband and I were driving through a fairy tale of some kind!

Morning Layers

The sun was rising in the morning sky, so colors were becoming more intense.  Still, the mist on the ground, stronger sun and fields along the horizon all combined to create a vibrant layered view of world around.

Morning Light

The pond was quiet.  The birds either hadn’t yet been or had been and were gone from their morning feed.  The mist was still clutching the shoreline shrubs, but the warm rays of the sun were there, reflected in the red orange of grasses along another part of the shore.

Dawn on the Beach

Dawn on the Beach

Sometimes, getting up really early has its rewards like the day I photographed the sunrise on Galveston Beach!!

Daybreak Flight

It’s truly quilte peaceful to watch the seagulls flying over the shore along the beach, periodically diving to capture breakfast.  With the sun just breaking over the horizon, it’s truly a moment that one carries throughout the rest of the day.

Early Morning

This view was the reward for rising early in the morning.  A walk on the beach, watching the sunrise.  I can’t think of a more peaceful way to begin the day!

Morning Flight

The morning was just quiet enough to be able to hear the seagull’s wings as he took flight.  The waves seemed to be willing to give him the spotlight for the moment, and the sun hadn’t yet risen to assume its place as star of this morning show.

Seagull Morning

It’s dawn, before daybreak, and a lone seagull is on morning patrol.  He’s silhouetted against the light blue of the sky and seems impervious to the beauty behind him.  It reminded me of how frequently we take nature’s beauty for granted.

Beachy Sketches

While visiting the Florida Keys, several photographic images seemed to work best when I converted them to digital watercolor sketches.  Take a look – I hope you agree.
Beach Bums

Between our camping site, and the beach, were beach grasses.  The grasses served to give both my husband and I and those on the beach a level of privacy.  As I looked out to the beach, I could only see the tops of the heads (and hats) of those who were enjoying a lovely day on the beach.
Sunrise Coast

Early mornings were quite lovely at the beach where my husband and I camped in the Florida Keys.  One of the things I liked the best were that often, the sunrises were more pastel than brilliant in nature.  Can’t you just see yourself walking along this solitary shore?
Heading down the Keys

Often in the mornings along the shore in the Florida Keys, one could see fishing boats heading out, taking customers out for a day of sun, sea, and hopefully, fish!  They seemed to space themselves so that each boat created its own peaceful view.

Samoan Sunrise
When we got to the town of Apia, on the island of Upolu, in Samoa, we had the most different sunrise that I believe I’ve ever seen.  It seemed like the sky was trying to decide whether or not to rain or storm.  So, the sunrise was a bit muted, yet sort of golden, and then even sepia toned before the clouds decided to let the sun begin to shine thru.  Take a look.

Sunstar Morning
I’ve decided to trade off for my Foto Art Friday pieces, and start to include some “pure” photo images that I feel fall into the category of “art”, whatever that is!  This piece was taken one morning as we sailed around the Panama Canal.  There was some moisture in the air, and the sun coming up over the horizon caught those drops of water and really shone.  It’s the sort of image that I feel offers each of us hope.

Tasting Flight
This piece is based on an air race I watched recently.  I photographed the planes as they flew by the time check point for the final segment of the race.  Early in the morning of the second day of the race, I was lucky enough to capture the image that is the basis for this piece.  A small plane flying past the rising sun.  I came across a quote from Leonardo Da Vinci, where he said “Once you have tasted flight, you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards….”  That seems to be true for most pilots I know.  I added the quote in the background of this piece and then finished it off with some special brush effects, to emphasize the feel of flight thru the wispiness of clouds.

Just Breathe
Sometimes, we find ourselves in situations – be they good or bad, happy or sad, where we become overwhelmed with the moment, and find it hard to focus on anything except that exact moment.  If the situation is negative or scary, that keeps us from taking positive steps to get ourselves either out of the situation or at least, better able to cope with it.  I saw a scene like that this week on TV, where one character had the second character to focus on taking deep breaths to calm down.  And, that, I thought, is a good lesson to take with us as we move forward.  If, or rather, when, you find yourself in an overwhelming situation, try to always have in the back of your mind the simple step to….just breathe.

Morning Thoughts
This piece finds it inspiration in the mundane!  One morning, I thought about how sometimes my thoughts are very muddled and scattered in the morning, much like the outer edges of this piece.  Then, I take a bit of time to write in my journal, and my thoughts, feelings and plans for the day become much clearer.  The ray of sunshine in the photo image in this piece reflects the bit of clarity I receive as I take the time to reflect in my journal.
