Red River

Red River

Although we spent just under a week in Red River, NM, there were some gems that I managed to capture and share on my photo imagery site!

Deserted Barn

I saw this barn while driving along a road in northern New Mexico.  It spoke to me of days gone by, as do many deserted buildings from the days of ranching and farming.  I converted this image into a digital collage, adding a brush showing written words, and the photograph of a dead tree I previously captured.  The background is one that I made manually in my studio and adds to the vintage feel of the piece.

Summer Grass

Can’t you just feel the warm summer breeze as it brushes over your skin when you look at this image?  The tips of this grass would feel like soft brushes as you run your hand over them.  It feels like a warm August day in the country, and that’s just when this image was captured.

Enjoy!

Deserted Buildings on the Cabot Trail
While we were exploring the Cabot Trail, we passed a few great deserted buildings – a house and a barn.  Take a look at some images that reflect the character of the places.
Clapboard House
While in the Atlantic Canada Provinces, I noticed that a lot of the older buildings had clapboard exteriors.  I really loved the look of the graying wood tiles!  Altho this house has regular plank wood siding, the front has that great clapboard – and the red really made everything pop!
Rusty Barn
This barn in Nova Scotia had a lot going for it, in terms of texture – the clapboard portions, regular slatted wood siding in other portions, and then the rusty metal on the side!  The red door molding just adds a great pop of additional color to the rust.
Clapboard Window
This window just really reflected a great difference in patterns.  The clapboard siding of the building is a sort of checkered pattern, with lovely shading.  Then, the window adds some lateral stripes in a bright color that really offsets things wonderfully.

Old Barn Pencil Sketches
Not far from where we camped near Acadia National Park, there was an old deserted farmhouse and barn.  In a previous blog, I shared the photo collage piece I created using the farmhouse for inspiration, and I thought I’d share a few images of the barn and farmhouse window I converted into colored pencil sketches.
I loved the detail that there was in the window from the old barn.  The mismatched wood boards making up the barn, and the old red torn material that was underneath the wood, created some lovely texture.
Old Barn Window
In this piece, you can see the entire barn, with the window in the lower corner of the barn.  Again, I was drawn to the texture of the wood, and the different wood that was used to board up the door.  It looks like there was only that one window in the barn.  It made me wonder why they even bothered with the one window, since it was small and wouldn’t add much overall light inside the barn when the barn door had been closed.  Still, it makes for some interesting character to the structure!

Hidden Story
The old barn that is the focus of this piece, reminds me of lives all around us that have portions of them held close, and hidden to much of the world around them.  People may share a portion of their life story with us, but many people have pieces that they don’t share, that remain hidden.  Sometimes, it’s embarrassment, other times, it’s fear of judgement, and there are times when some things are just too painful to keep reliving.  This piece is an acknowledgement that all of us have those hidden stories within ourselves.
