Evening Show
The other day, we had an incredible sunset at our home.  It seemed that everywhere I looked, there was a magnificent view of it.  Let me take you through those few moments between day and night, when Nature put on quite the show…..
The show began with a golden glow, and rays that reached up into the blue early evening sky.
Interesting Sky
This image really made me feel that we humans are truly insignificant, when it comes to Nature in its entirety.  The vastness of the sky and what lays beyond was something I felt in my gut when I saw this scene.  The very large mountains seem tiny in the distance.  The last rays of the day burned bright until they reached the cool of the sky beyond our earth. And, in the forefront, trees that seem so much taller than we are, are dwarfed by all of this.
Evening Rays
And, yet, there were light, almost whimsical moments in this moment.  I chose to focus on just a small piece of the wonder of this sunset, and came away with this almost happy view of warm and cool colors mixing it up in the sky

New Art on Fine Art America
The following images are from a recent sunset – one of the magical ones.  Many of the sunsets here in New Mexico are bold and beautiful.  However, the other night, the sunset was soft and gentle.  Take a look at these and see if you don’t agree!
Abstract Sky
The sky was incredible during a recent sunset at our home in New Mexico.  The entirety of the sky could be overwhelming, so I focused on just one portion where the sky painted an abstract in nature.
Hole in the Sky
There is something magical when a sunset happens above the clouds.  It’s the only way I can explain this image.  The sunset was shining down through the clouds, creating this almost spiritual effect.
Evening Sky
Although a sunset can be bright and bold, it also can be soft and gentle, as it is in this image.  It has a soothing, calming effect, as if it’s there to help us slow down, breathe deep, and be grateful for the day we’ve had.

Virga Rain
Simply put, virga is rain that never makes it down to earth.  Most commonly, it is seen in the Southwest US and Canadian prairies in North America.  Always interesting to see, when combined with a desert Southwest sunset, it becomes magical.

Enjoy!

Sunset Virga
The other day, we had some virga falling at the perfect time to coincide with sunset.  Great images were the result…..
Rosy Virga
Virga is rain that never makes it to the ground.  It looks like delicate sheets of falling rain.
Raining Sunset
Altho I don’t know if this happened at a high enough altitude, sometimes the virga are ice crystals that melt as they fall and reach closer to earth.
Layers of Sunset
Sometimes virga can trigger a microburst.  We had one of those here last summer that wiped out some power lines and left us without power for about 37 hours.
Virga over South Mountain
Virga is very common in desert and temperate climates, and in North America, it’s mainly seen in the Western US and Canadian prairies.

Circular Clouds
This piece celebrates the wonder of White Sands National Monument.  Specifically, at sunset, when the sun warms the sky and it’s a nice compliment to the sand and desert plants.  The background of this piece is a vintage love letter, where the writer talks about being on a journey with another person.  And, such is the way I feel about nature of all types, and today specifically the wonder of this US National Monument.

Sunset Sky
On one of our last day’s home before our California wine country trip, there was a lovely sunset.  I captured a few images of it, but rather than have me ramble on about how beautiful it was, I thought I would just supply some quotes about the beauty of nature to complement them.
Sunset Colors

The mountains are calling and I must go.

End of Southwest Day
Sunset is still my favorite color, and rainbow is second.

Sunset Rain, Sunrise & Hummers
A few days ago, we had a fabulous sunset rain (after all, it is the monsoon season here), a magnificent sunrise, and some glimpses at the hummingbirds that frequent both our back and front gardens.

Rosy Rain
We have wonderful sunsets, and we also have some great views of rain off in the distance, but this evening, it seemed we were to get a bit of a rarity – a combination of both!  As we sat on our back patio, we first saw the spots of rain – the areas where the clouds seem to be sort of coming apart from below and dropping toward the ground.  But, sunset was approaching and the clouds began to reflect some great color.

Rain in the Evening Light
As the sunset progressed, the underside of the clouds really became lighted in the most spectacular way.  The sky even seemed to glow behind the San Pedro Mountains that we look at to the north.

Monsoon Evening
As the light sort of evened out, we could see more areas of rain, or raining colors, as it seemed to us.  No rain for us, but the folks north of us certainly seemed to be getting wet!

Evening Encroaches
Finally, evening seemed to be slowly encroaching on us.  I really liked the differing colors of the sunset.  Yellow and orange where there was no rain, and pinkish purple in the rainclouds.  Nothing like New Mexico for fabulously diverse sunsets!

Sunrise
The next morning, I was up early enough to see an incredibly brilliant sunrise.  Some of the clouds seemed to be holding moisture, but nothing seemed to be actually falling down onto the ground.  Time to rise and shine, sleepyheads!

Breakfast Dining
As I sat outside, enjoying the sunrise, I realized I was sharing the morning with the hummingbirds that take up residence somewhere close to us over the summer.  This little guy seems oblivious to the sunrise – he’s just focused on breakfast!

Sipping
Here’s another little one, getting his (or her) morning meal!  One of the things that I find amusing is how territorial these little ones are – it’s extremely rare that we see more than one of them at the feeder at the same time.  They will sort of fight with each other, and then one will sip for a bit, then another skirmish, and another will sip, and so on until they’ve all eventually had their fill.  Wouldn’t it be easier to just get along?
Enjoy!
